Sachin Tendulkar : the GOD of Indian Cricket

With the thrashing that we got as a test team in England and Australia, the talks of retiring senior players is on it's peak. I do agree that there are certain players that need retirement and we need to retire our captain from the test team too, but there is nothing short of shocking disbelief when I hear people say that Sachin needs to retire. I have my reasons to believe that no-one can dare retire Sachin from the game. He is not called GOD of the religion of cricket for namesake. He has earned and deserved it.

And for those who feel the man is past his prime I would give some stats and facts to make them believe that Sachin still is the best you have. he is still the GOD of cricket and will always be.

Sachin started his career at the young age of 15 yrs and 232 days when we all mortals where studying just to get into a college. He scored a century on his first class debut and was the youngest to do so. And he became the only batsman to score hundreds in all of his Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy and Irani Trophy debuts. In 1992 he became the youngest and first overseas born player to play for the county of Yorkshire. He has the highest number of centuries and runs in any form of cricket ( I do not wish to include T20 as any form of cricket. Its fun and not sport) . But for those who argue these are things of the past, let us talk about the present.

In the recently concluded Australia series, Sachin was the second highest run scorer after Virat Kohli with 13 runs short of him. By these standards also he is the second best batsman in the team and It would be sheer stupidity to ask your second best batsman to quit the game. In the series in England also Sachin was the second highest run scorer  behind Dravid and in the series in South Africa, Sachin was the highest run scorer in the series. These are a few stats to prove that GOD is still your best player. And when it comes to giving a chance to new players, nobody gave them chances by sacking senior players. The newcomers just have to prove it to the selectors that they are better than the current crop, which cannot be said for Sachin Tendulkar. I do not see any player in the country capable of replacing the GOD.

To give examples that the GOD has almost alone taken care of Indian cricket in the last 2 decades one can use examples of the 2003 world cup. He has scored 33 centuries for a wining cause which is greater than any other batsman in world cricket. And out of that 33, 26 have come out against the top teams of world cricket. If all these stats and awards and his performance still leaves any scope of doubt among the non believers, I would like to quote some sentences from the masters of the game. From people who play and understand cricket much better than us.

Nothing bad can happen to us if we're on a plane in India with Sachin Tendulkar on it."
- Hashim Amla, the South African batsman, reassures himself as he boards a flight.

"Sometimes you get so engrossed in watching batsmen like Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar that you lose focus on your job."
- Yaseer Hameed in pakistani newspaper.

"To Sachin, the man we all want to be"
- Andrew Symonds wrote on an aussie t-shirt he autographed specially for Sachin.

Sachin is a genius. I'm a mere mortal.
- Brian Charles Lara

"We did not lose to a team called India...we lost to a man called Sachin."
- Mark Taylor, during the test match in Chennai (1997)

"The more I see of him the more confused I'm getting to which is his best knock."
- M. L. Jaisimha

Shah Rukh Khan: There was a big party where stars from bollywood and cricket were invited. Suddenly, there was a big noise, all wanted to see approaching Amitabh Bachhan. Then Sachin entered the hall and
Amitabh was leading the queue to get a grab of the GENIUS!!
- Shah Rukh Khan in an interview.

"India me aap PrimeMinister ko ek Baar Katghare me khada kar sakte hain..Par Sachin Tendulkar par Ungli nahi utha Sakte.. "
- Navjot Singh Sidhu on TV

He can play that leg glance with a walking stick also.
- Waqar Younis

On a train from Shimla to Delhi, there was a halt in one of the stations. The train stopped by for few minutes as usual. Sachin was nearing century, batting on 98. The passengers, railway officials, everyone on the train waited for Sachin to complete the century. This Genius can stop time in India!!
- Peter Rebouck - Aussie journalist

There are 2 kind of batsmen in the world. One Sachin Tendulkar. Two all the others.
- Andy Flower

"I have seen god, he bats at no.4 for India"
- Mathew Hayden

"Sachin Tendulkar has carried Indian cricket on his shoulders for 21 years. So it was fitting that we carried him on our shoulders after this win,"
- Virat Kohli

And for those who still refuse to believe in the GOD of Indian cricket, all I can think of is, that it's not really an issue, we have atheists too. Open for discussion in the comments section, where I can prove what GOD has done with more examples and stats.

Cheers!!

  1. This is a typical "Bhartiya" mentality. No person is above the law And No person is superior than the sport. If one cant perform, he should give up OR SHOULD BE SHOWN THE DOOR. It is india's pride which is at stake. NOBODY is greate than it. If a senior person is making 30-40 runs for past 1 year, HE IS TAKING UP A PLACE FOR BUDDING CRICKETER. Either he should go OR SHOULD BE SHOWN DOOR (Never mind sense-less 100th 100)

  2. It is surprising you say so after proving that the guy has and is still performing. And as mentioned, a budding cricketer should replace him and should not be waiting for a vacant spot.

  3. He he he .. I pity those guys who suggest that Sachin should retire .. Sachin was the highest run getter until Kohli scored that century .. SO that should make him 2nd best in the team and still ppl want him out .. Insanely inappropriate ..

I am lucky and priviledged that I was born in the era when Sachin played his most of the Cricket .. As an Indian, I feel that I am in huge debt and I owe so much to this man for all the entertainment, fun , tears, joy , anger and what not .. When he gets out to bat every time, 1 billion people expect him to score a ton .. What a huge responsibility and expectation this man has carried all these years on his tiny shoulders .. We can't even stand a small exam or project deadline and starts to panic while this man has to appear in exam almost every time he sets feet on the field for almost 22 yrs .. What a man - what a player !!

" When Sachin gets out to bat - People switch on their TV sets and Switch off their lives "

    Love you Sachin :)

  4. He is becoming anather Kapil Dev. Everyone was waiting for that sense-less 432nd Wicket (Just to make him highest wicket taker). I liked Don Bradman's approach. He declared that he will retire after such-n-such Test. He DID. He did not waited/took back retirement to achieve average of 100. He retired at 99.94. Its high time Sachin should target a date. And if doesnt achieve that sense-less record, just giveup. YOU DONT GET EVERYTHING YOU WANT IN YOUR LIFE.
And now "crazy" indians have already labled him GOD, by making 100th 100 he is not going to become "BIGGER GOD". Al along he played for records, at least in retirement he should give a thought for his country.

  5. I think it is the expectation from the master blaster which makes people think about his retirement. We all expect him to score a century and even when he scores 80 we think that he has not scored at all...I don't know if but if anyone has watched the Australia test series..he was in best of touch right from ball one. we just expect him to score hundred every time.
People who talk about Sachin's retirement should really give attention to the latest statistics for him provided above. To add more, at this age he has he best throwing arm. he is the best catcher in slips or any position on field. He is the most awake player on the ground. Not sure if people have seen the catch popped out by VVS and Sachin took it. what is missing is century in each innings. That is what people expect from him. Which I think won't come every time. We have to give him that much excuse. after all he is GOD in human body. He has be human at times.

I agree with Soham, we are lucky to see him watch playing live....Thanks Sachin.

  6. well said umesh and soham... wht pathetic loser like attitude to wait for GOD to vacate his position so a newcomer could get a place in the team.. u can use this "sense-less" defeatist logic to give frustrated mediocrity an opportunity in the indian cricket team but at the end how wud u make these losers capable of utilizing this opportunity got as a part of GOD's charity.. instead of crying their frustrated wasted lifes abt mind numbingly baseless excuses for their incapacity y dont they take a leaf out of virat kohli's book.. he is so young, performing besides GOD and living up.. thts hw u get noticed, not by waiting for GOD to leave.. LOSERS!!! FRUSTRATED LOSERS !!!!! GOD loves his country too much to leave it in the hands of frustrated losers who dormantly wait for another persons failure to change their lifes instead of fighting for their own success.. Mr. C of cricket shud really go n chk his stats to c how many times sachin has gotten out in his 90s before saying tht he plays for records.. its not marriage tht u set a date and retire.. thts by far the dumbest thing i have heard.. empty vessels do indeed make more noise.. some ppl just have to use it, coz GOD has given them a voice box.. making sense doesnt figure.. in a country whr cricket is religion it is downright barbaric to have ppl this ignorant and blatantly glorifying it.. pls quit making a fool of urself n do proper homework before opening ur pieholes n spewing out utter crap.. braindead ppl shud not be allowed to watch cricket as a rule coz anyways they dont seem to be able to process information let alone acknowledging evident facts.. they watch one series or probably just the news and form an opinion.. some just repeat wht they hear in a post match analysis without even understanding wht they r suggesting.. the points simple... u want GOD's place go get someone as good to take it.. until then u'd rather keep ur ludicrous seethe to urself..

Also ppl talking nonsense so confidently.. y dont they put their names on their comments..

  9. What's amusing is that, in a team game, people are expecting a single person to win a game for India. When people crib about Sachin playing for records, what they fail to see is that, in a team which has most of it's batsman out of form, his supposedly 'selfish' attitude is at least saving India's face. Apart from Dravid, he's the only one who has a good record on challenging pitches. And even Dravid doesn't have a good record in Australia and South Africa. The only good series that Dravid had in Australia was when there was no McGrath and Gillespie.

And imagine the kind of pressure that Sachin must be under if we ourselves get so nervous whenever he nears a 100. I mean it's almost like us trying to meet a very important deadline, except that we don't have about a billion people scrutinizing our every move.

About people calling him God; that is an individual opinion. Whether he's the God of Cricket or not is up for debate, but he's definitely the best Indian batsman ever, the best of his generation, and arguably among the top 3 batsman of all time.

I agree with the first person's post that no one should be above the team. But the fact is that, currently, he's probably the best batsman in the team. And while we need to start the painful process of transition, given Sachin's form, he shouldn't be the first one to go. His time will come, but not now.

    1. I agree with you, that he should not be 1st person to go. Even big corporate houses have succession plans for CEOs and bigwigs in the company. Why not have succession plan for him. What will be the value of that "prized" 100th 100, if he takes anather 100 innings to score it. Sachin has nothing more left to achieve (except that socalled record of 100th ton). What else is he playing for? Even if he plays he cant win matches for india (Now the argument is put forward that cricket is a team game. How can single individual win matches. This argument is same as the one: If Congress wins in UP, it is because of Rahul Gandhi. If it looses it is problem of whole congress).

So Only thing Sachin is playing for is : Records and may be Money.

    2. "Saving India's Face"? After 0-4 loss India still has face to show? What max would have happened had Sachin not played? Instead of loosing 2 games by Innings, India would have lost all 4 games by Innings. If you call this as "Saving India's Face", I dont have anything to say.

      Delete
  10. @Anonymous : Don't you think GOD deserves a chance to play out his 100th ton. Check these stats for you to know. He scored his 99th ton in World Cup at Nagpur against SA in March 2011 (11 months ago). Then he scored
53 against Aus in WC Quarter Final
85 against Pak in WC Semifinal
    91 against Eng
    76 against WI
    94 against WI
73, 41, 80 against Aus in recent series.

remember he has to start from zero when get in again. we guys ask for rewards at the end of every year for the work we do. Does he not deserve few extra innings to make his 100th Ton ? And will not India's name shine if he gets them ? Plus it is not that he is struggling to get runs. He was the first man to score 200 in One Day Cricket.

What else you want to know ?

  11. It gives me pain when some newcomer bowler from Australia/England take Sachins wicket for 40-50 runs and then sarcastically boast "It Gives me Immense pleasure to take Sachin's Wicket". He must have become laughing stock in opposition's camp.

By prolonging his carrear Sachin is actually harming his own Image. He is in no way helping India by being part of it. This always happens when person becomes bigger than the team.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No one is saying that he is bigger than team. Every one is defending his retirement. He is not in the team because he is old but he is there because he deserves a place.

  12. @ Umesh: I agree with what you say about Sachin. His innings if not hundreds still is enough for the team.

@Anonymous. People who play the game know what a prized wicket it was. Its just people like us who have him in the team at times fail to realize the importance of a man carrying the burden of a billion expectations. We are mere mortals.

@All: Now even Dhanush has a song on Sachin..Beat that !!!

  13. Finally someone showed guts to "Rest" Sachin. And its paying off too for India. Bravo Dhoni!!! :-) :-) :-)

    ReplyDelete
  14. @ Anonymous: Sachin was rested as per the rotation policy by selectors in which Gambhir and Sehwag were also rested. Dhoni had nothing to do with it.He is struggling to keep his captaincy and place in ODI, so resting Sachin is not his piece of cake.
People tried and failed to make the point thru and gave up coz neither stats nor current performance proves anything to you.
You have been repeating your points but gave no evidence to prove your feelings for Sachin. Any person who would know Indian cricket would have atleast agreed to the fact that he is the best Indian cricketer we have.
But as said, there is a GOD. You believe it or not. Atleast Atheists try to give evidence why they do not believe in GOD.
Speaking against Sachin is a sin in my blog. Speaking for Dhoni was a bigger sin. :-)

    1. At best he is the best "entertainer" in world cricket. NOT a Cricketer. A Cricketer should play for team not personal milestones.

For Stats: There are three types of lies
      1) Big Lies 2) Small Lies and the third one is called statistics.

And going by stats, if you check crunch situation stats OR 2nd Innings stats, he will be at best Shivaji Park Cricketer.

I am 1001% sure, he would not have been able to win yesterdays match when 13 runs needed from 5 balls. You need "Cool" person to do that.

I dont think selection committee lead by K Shrikanth has guts to impose rotation to remove sachin.

If Speaking for Team India is a sin I will do it again and again. :-) :-) :-)

    2. Dude, I have to agree with Kapil here. You are talking all kind of stuff about Sachin, but you haven't given any logical reason for it. You are talking about crunch situations and innings stats; please go and check them on Cricinfo. They have a facility where you can create filters to see how a player has performed in certain games. You will find that Sachin averages over 50 in finals and over 40 in 2nd innings chases.

And are you the same guy who compared Sachin to Rahul Gandhi somewhere above? (it's really difficult to know if you don't put in your name) But let me tell you, if Cricket matches were won by you public speaking prowess, then Harsha Bhogle might have been one of the best cricketers ever, along with Richie Benaud and John Arlott.

And how can you say that you are talking for team India if you talk about dropping it's best ODI batsman (along with Kohli and Dhoni) from the team.

      Delete
  15. @ Anonymous: Please do not say you speak for Team India cause our country works on majority not on dictatotrship. You are one in hundred to say so, so you DO NOT speak for the team.

If stats are lies and performances are lies, then there is nothing to prove right from wrong in the world. And as Gaurav Agrees, now lets start with some reasons from you on why you speak against Sachin. If you check the stats, the blog and all the comments, each one has given logical reasons behind their points.

And m sure if Sachin would have been playing, we would not have reached that situation.

sachin the "God"....... ha ha ha..i have seen "God" failing 29 times since he made his 99th ton...and had never seen "God" playing a match winning innings for team India..and if u r talkin about IPL then i dont even consider talkin abt that crap..i would rather consider Virat kohli and MSD far better player then "GOD"...
    QUOTE...i have seen
"God" failing in two world cup finals ha ha......"God" only know playing in home condition where balls are of 120 kph...and ya again never seen "God" even defensing a ball of 150+kph or i shud say 130+ i think its nightmare for "God" to play in AUS or SA..."God" even dont consider respecting someone gift or feeling behind someone's gift and ya i m talkin abt Michael schumaker gifted FErrari which was sold by "God" the people in india today want results and in which i think "God" is failing every time and if u consider this type of people to b "God" then "middle finger" to these types of "God".

  17. @ Deepak: I am not surprised with what you said cause I do not expect mediocre minds to understand the greatness of Sachin.
Well, you did not even understand what Harshada said (your reply to her comment above). She is a big Sachin fan and have spoken for Sachin and not against her.
Do you know a site called espncricinfo.com. Check the stats for Sachin and his win ratios of centuries. Well I wonder if you can even spell cricket right. The time when you were in your nappies, he was facing the west Indian and Pakistani bowlers whom the world scared. You sure need an awakening, a lesson in reading and i bet nobody can teach you about cricket. Its a lost cause

QUOTE; GOD again failed there.(just heard rahul dravid is announcing retirement from cricket)atleast maybe he is thinking that he could b the reason behind india's recent failure so he decided to retire(i respect his decision) bt the "God" men.... he just dont want to loose any oppurtinity to earn money hiding his pretensions(to earn money) by saying that he loves cricket and blah blah.... though i m 18yrs of age bt i know more abt cricket then you and my views on cricket are cosmopolitan the GOD shud b thrown off from team as quick as possible ar else we shud b ready for another eng or aus like situation just bcoz of the "GOD"
